The Plasma Alliance used a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the platelets; the latter would then be pumped back into my arm, along with saline solution. It probably would have been better to donate, but that extra $40 a week helped pay my rent. (And it was the only time in my life that it literally paid to be overweight.)<br /><br />Incidentally, the universal blood type is O negative.
